Astaxanthin is a carotenoid-based cosmetic active known for its antioxidant properties. It is used in skincare and personal-care formulations designed to help protect skin from oxidative stress and environmental aggressors. Astaxanthin has an intense red-orange pigmentation and is suitable for antioxidant-focused serums, creams, lotions, moisturizers and other premium skincare formulations.
It can be incorporated into formulations where antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties are desired. Astaxanthin is lipophilic/oil-soluble and is generally used at low concentrations because of its strong colour. Its stability can be affected by light, heat and oxidation, so suitable formulation and storage practices are important.
